From First Dance Steps to Competition — A Lesson in Growth

Two years ago, I did something completely outside my comfort zone, I walked into a sequence dancing class, having never danced before in my life although I have always wanted to.
I didn’t know the steps. I didn’t know anyone. In truth, I had no idea what to expect. But I decided to give it a go anyway.
Looking back now, I never imagined that decision would lead me to competing just two years later, and even coming home with places. What started as trying something new has turned into a journey that has taught me valuable lessons, not just about dancing, but about business and personal growth too.
Starting From Scratch
Those early days were challenging. Like learning anything new, there were moments where I felt awkward and unsure. But I kept turning up, week after week, slowly building confidence and learning new skills.
Without realising it at the time, I was developing resilience, consistency, and confidence, qualities that are just as important in business as they are on the dance floor.
A Step Forward
Last year, I was asked to join the formation team, which felt like a huge milestone. I couldn’t quite believe how far I had come from my first class.
Then in October, we travelled to Blackpool for our first competition together. It was an incredible experience, exciting, slightly nerve-wracking, but most of all inspiring. It gave me the confidence to think about pushing myself further.
Taking the Leap
This Easter, my dancing partner and I decided to enter our first competition in the beginners’ sections. We went in with no expectations, simply wanting to enjoy the experience and see how we got on.
To our surprise, we came home with:
Two second places
One third place
And our formation team also achieved third place
For our first competition, we were absolutely delighted.
Sometimes, the biggest achievements come from simply deciding to take that first step and that you do not have to be perfect to begin. You just have to start
Lessons That Apply to Business
This experience really made me reflect on the similarities between learning to dance and running a business.
When I started my business, I didn’t have all the answers. There were times I felt uncertain, and plenty of moments outside my comfort zone. But just like dancing, progress comes from:
Showing up consistently
Being willing to learn
Taking opportunities when they arise
Having the confidence to try
.
Then last week my dancing partner decided to step away from dancing, and I now find myself starting again with a new partner. It is going to be another challenge, learning new routines, building confidence together, and finding our rhythm, but it is one I am ready to embrace.
And once again, it reminded me of business.
Things do not always go to plan.
We face setbacks, unexpected changes, and moments where we have to regroup and start again. But that’s all part of the journey.
Just like dancing, in business we sometimes get knock-backs, and the key is to pick ourselves up, adapt, and keep moving forward.
