Why I’m the Right Virtual Personal Assistant for You:

My Journey So Far

I am often asked how I developed the skills, resilience, and passion required to support others successfully and what qualifies me to be your Virtual Personal Assistant. The truth is, it has been a journey shaped over many years, across different sectors, and through experiences that have strengthened both my professionalism and my love for helping people thrive behind the scenes.

Where It All Began: Barclays Bank (1980–1994)

My career began at Barclays Bank, where I worked as a Bank Clerk. At 16 it was my first real taste of professional life, and it didn’t take long for me to realise just how important accuracy, confidentiality, and genuine customer care were. Every day brought new faces, new challenges, and new opportunities to earn someone’s trust, and it was here that my appreciation for attention to detail truly began to take shape.

Keen to grow, I pushed myself beyond the day-to-day role. I studied for a Business Diploma that covered finance, economics, and even early computer programming, a far cry from today’s technology, but a valuable foundation all the same. Alongside this, I attended secretarial night school for three years, proudly achieving distinctions in every exam taken.

Looking back, this chapter was not just about learning skills, it was where I discovered my drive, my work ethic, and my passion for supporting others, qualities that have continued to guide me throughout my life.

A Step into Healthcare: GP Receptionist (1997–2002)

After a brief pause in my career to raise my two girls, I joined the NHS as a part-time GP Receptionist.

This role was a whole new world, where patience, empathy, and adaptability were essential.

I learned to manage a busy reception, communicate with care, and handle sensitive situations,  skills that taught me the importance of supporting people efficiently and compassionately.

Growing Responsibilities: Personal Assistant to the Director of Public Health (2002–2006)

It was now time for a new challenge and a full-time position. My journey took an exciting turn when I secured the post of Personal Assistant to the Director of Public Health. It was a role that demanded more than just managing diaries and preparing confidential documents, it required foresight, adaptability, and the ability to anticipate needs before they arose.

Eager to grow alongside these responsibilities, I immersed myself in a management diploma and a range of leadership courses. Those years were transformative: not only did I sharpen my organisational skills, but I also honed my decision-making, gained a deeper understanding of strategy, and discovered the confidence to support leaders at the highest level.

Executive-Level Support: Barnsley NHS Foundation Trust (2006–2018)

Always wanting to move higher into the executive world, the next chapter of my career took me to the role of Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive at Barnsley NHS Foundation Trust. This was one of the most challenging and rewarding positions I have held. I coordinated board-level meetings, prepared high-level reports, managed tight deadlines, and ensured the organisation ran smoothly behind the scenes.

It was here that I truly mastered the art of anticipating needs, juggling multiple priorities, and keeping everything moving seamlessly. The experience strengthened my professionalism, problem-solving skills, and confidence in supporting leaders at the very top.

A Creative Detour: Floristry & Entrepreneurship

After many years in administration, I decided to take a break and explore a long-held passion: floristry. I retrained, set up my own business, and threw myself into everything from sourcing suppliers to marketing, managing clients, and running a small business day-to-day.

This chapter taught me so much: resilience, adaptability, creativity, and business awareness. I gained skills in customer service, time management, organisation, and problem-solving, all transferable and valuable in the administrative world.

Most importantly, it reminded me that no matter where life takes you, every experience adds value to your professional journey.

Returning to What I Love (2023–Present)

While running my floristry business was rewarding, I realised that my true passion lies in administration. I love supporting others, bringing structure to busy schedules, and helping people achieve more by taking care of the details that often get in the way.

In 2023, I returned to administrative work with renewed enthusiasm and sense of purpose with a broader skill set than ever before, ready to bring my experience, creativity, and dedication to new clients.
